Trump, a Republican, heavily criticised Mamdani before he took office in January — calling him “my little communist” and a “total nut job” — but the two men have since struck a surprisingly warm relationship.

“Hopefully, you’re going to be a great [mayor]. I’ll be able to say you’re going to be a great one, and you’re off to a start,” Trump told Mamdani at a news conference.

“I want what’s good for New York, I want what’s good for the country. So if I had a choice of having him be a bad mayor or horrible mayor, I don’t want that. I want him to be a great mayor,” the US president said.

Their closed-door talks in Manhattan, which lasted around an hour, marked the pair’s third public meeting since Mamdani swept the mayoral election last year.

“We appreciate the president’s commitment to the city,” Mamdani said of Trump, who was visiting his hometown New York ahead of the United Nations General Assembly.

The 34-year-old said he expressed his “very strong opinions about how we can keep New Yorkers safe” when asked about Trump’s culling of Temporary Protected Status for thousands of immigrants as part of mass deportation plans.

Mamdani said they also spoke about a 12,000-home building proposal in New York, which the pair previously discussed in February and would require an estimated $21 billion in federal government funding.

He said he planned to continue cooperating with Trump, despite acknowledging they have “many disagreements”.

“We’ve both spoken about very different approaches, very different beliefs, and I will continue to have conversations with the president, and frankly with anyone who can deliver relief to the people of this city,” Mamdani said.

Trump’s visit came as top US television networks essentially boycotted coverage of the president in protest of his decision to ban three outlets, CNN, MS NOW and Politico, from the White House.

Mamdani said he had told Trump that all members of the press would be welcome at their joint press conference, held in front of the mayor’s official residence.

“That is something that I believe in, is everyone, no matter the opinion or the critique, that we engage,” he told reporters.

Trump, meanwhile, brushed off a suggestion that he had issued the media bans to distract the public from criticism of the war in Iran.

“It’s interesting because they (the media) said they were going to boycott me, but they never boycott me, so I wasn’t very worried about that,” he said.

The incident happened around 8am (10am PKT) in Turgutlu in the province of Manisa, near the western resort city of Izmir, the regional governor’s office said.

School shootings are rare in Turkiye, although there were two attacks in April on consecutive days in southern Turkiye that sparked widespread anger.

“Eleven students were injured, two of them seriously.. The minor who carried out the attack was quickly apprehended and taken into custody,” Justice Minister Akin Gurlek wrote on X.

He said the suspect’s parents and grandfather had also been detained by investigators probing the attack, which saw police and rescuers rushing to the scene alongside panicked parents.

Several media outlets, including IHA news agency and NTV private television, said students were among the injured, with police and rescuers rushing to the scene.

DHA news agency broadcast CCTV footage of the alleged attacker, a young man wearing black jeans, a black jacket and a green top, walking along a street holding what appeared to be a rifle.

IHA had a similar image of what appeared to be the same person with a gun, although this time running.

Footage from outside the school showed police wrestling a man in a white shirt to the ground before leading him away, as a woman screamed, with onlookers pressed against the school fence, filming with their mobile phones.

Authorities have opened an investigation into the incident, the governor’s office said.

School safety

The attack came five months after two back-to-back school shootings that raised public concerns about security in Turkish schools.

In April, a 14-year-old opened fire at a school in the southern province of Kahramanmaras, killing a teacher and nine students aged 10 and 11. The attacker died at the scene.

A day earlier, another teenager opened fire at his former high school in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa, wounding 16 people before taking his own life when confronted by police.

Following the two attacks, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dismissed a deputy education minister and pledged his government would introduce tighter controls on gun ownership.

He vowed school safety would be one of the government’s top priorities.

“When we look at similar attacks around the world, especially in the United States, we see one of the perpetrators’ aims is to terrorise society,” he said.

New security measures

The attack came a day after Education Minister Yusuf Tekin and Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci signed a protocol setting out security measures for the 2026-2027 academic year, which began on September 14.

Ciftci said authorities had strengthened school security following the April shootings.

“To ensure such pain is never experienced again, I would like to remind everyone that we must be extremely vigilant this year,” he said.

He said 31,000 school grounds supervisors had been deployed for the first time.

The interior ministry also carried out a fresh security assessment of schools and assigned police officers to first- and second-degree risk schools, where they remain on permanent duty, he said.

Schools classified as lower risk are assigned police liaison officers who work in coordination with school administrations.

Police charged with monitoring security, public order, narcotics and juvenile issues would conduct regular patrols around schools, he said.

Authorities would also inspect school buses and review abandoned buildings near schools under the new measures.

Speaking at a meeting of the OIC Committee of Six on Palestine in New York on Monday, Dar said the Palestinian cause remained “central to the OIC and the collective conscience of the Muslim Ummah”.

“The Committee of Six has an important responsibility to mobilise political and diplomatic support for the Palestinian people and to ensure that the international community does not lose sight of their legitimate and inalienable rights,” he noted.

He said the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, both in Gaza and the West Bank, continued to demand “urgent and immediate attention”, with the humanitarian situation remaining dire and the security environment “extremely fragile”.

“Our recent diplomatic efforts have created an opportunity to advance a critical process. Serious challenges still remain,” Dar said, adding that the Gaza ceasefire was being violated “on an almost daily basis”.

He appreciated the efforts of mediating countries, including the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye, towards implementing the comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict, as endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2803.

Dar said Israeli settlement activity, settler violence, annexation policies and other violations in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, continued to threaten the “territorial integrity and contiguity” of the occupied Palestinian territory and undermine the viability of a future Palestinian state.

Pakistan, he said, continued to “strongly condemn” Israeli violations at Al-Aqsa Mosque and Al-Haram Al-Sharif, including incursions by extremist settlers.

“These acts are flagrant violations of international law, relevant UN resolutions, and the historical and legal status quo governing the Holy Sites,” he said.

Dar said the ongoing situation required “renewed, coordinated diplomatic action” by the OIC and its member states, adding that the committee should continue to work on six points.

The first was to safeguard the historical and legal status quo at Al-Aqsa Mosque, Al-Haram Al-Sharif and other Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

Second, reject Israel’s illegal settlement expansion, annexation, settler violence and forced displacement in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.

Third, support the full and faithful implementation of the Gaza peace plan and UN Security Council Resolution 2803.

Fourth, ensure that reconstruction and governance arrangements in Gaza remain Palestinian-led, with a central role for the Palestinian Authority.

Fifth, support accountability for violations of international law and international humanitarian law; further strengthen coordination among OIC member states in other international forums to protect the Palestinian people and uphold international law.

Finally, maintain sustained international efforts towards a credible, irreversible and time-bound political process leading to the establishment of an independent, sovereign and contiguous State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, while also supporting Palestine’s full membership of the United Nations.

“As members of the OIC Committee of Six, we have a particular responsibility to translate our collective solidarity into sustained and coordinated diplomatic efforts,” Dar stressed.

“Pakistan’s solidarity with the Palestinian people remains steadfast and unwavering. We will continue to work with brotherly and partner countries to advance the Palestinian cause and contribute to a just and lasting resolution of the question of Palestine, in line with international legitimacy,” he affirmed.

The Foreign Office (FO) later shared a statement outlining DPM Dar’s remarks at the meeting.

The remarks come amid renewed Israeli settlement expansion and rising settler violence in the occupied West Bank.

Israel has recently added 2,167 housing units to its E1 settlement plan, bringing the total planned units to 3,401, a move that Palestinians and several countries have criticised as threatening the territorial contiguity of a future Palestinian state.

The UN has also reported a sharp rise in settler attacks. More than 1,600 incidents resulting in Palestinian casualties or property damage were recorded across 275 communities between January and September 14, while more than 2,600 Palestinians had been displaced in the context of settler violence and related access restrictions.

Dar meets with Libyan FM

Separately, in a meeting with Libya’s acting foreign minister, Al-Taher Al-Baour, Dar discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in trade, education and business-to-business exchanges, FO said in a statement.

During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the two sides exchanged views on “regional and international developments, including the evolving situation in the Middle East”, FO said.

The Libyan foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s “constructive diplomatic efforts” for regional peace and stability, according to FO.

DPM Dar underscored that “dialogue and diplomacy remained the only viable means of addressing regional challenges” and stressed the need for all parties to return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance regional stability, the statement added.

Dar meets with Japanese FM

Separately, in a meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, DPM Dar discussed ways to further deepen bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade and investment, education, health, the automobile sector and digital IT cooperation, the FO said in a statement.

They also exchanged views on “regional and international developments, including the situation in the Middle East”.

Motegi appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts in support of regional peace and stability, the FO added.

Both sides expressed hope that all parties would return to dialogue and pursue implementation of the Islamabad MoU. They also discussed the implications of the situation for energy supplies, supply chains and the global economy, according to the FO.

The two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the momentum of bilateral engagement and further expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, the statement added.
